Flu Prevention
Each year Columbiana County Health Department offers seasonal flu vaccine to children from 6 months up to 18 years at no cost. Adult vaccine is available as well as high dose vaccine for those over 65 that provides a better immune response and better protection from the flu. Flu vaccine is available in the fall and is available until spring. Vaccine is available at the Health Department during flu season and also at various sites around the county at one of our mobile clinics. Most insurance is accepted for adult vaccine.
Blood Pressure Screening
Free blood pressure screening and education are available to residents daily. Hypertension (elevated blood pressure), known as the "silent killer", can lead to heart attack and stroke. Hypertension often goes undetected and untreated because many people have no symptoms.
Hand Washing Program
The CDC and American Cleaning Institute have recognized the dire need for young people to wash their hands to decrease the spread of illnesses and absenteeism in the classroom. Nearly 22 million school days are lost due to the common cold alone, not to mention other diseases that are caused by bacteria and viruses.
The Health Department is now offering a “hands on” hand washing program. The program focuses on children Pre-k through third grade. It teaches the proper hand washing steps and techniques while making it fun and interesting for children to learn. We are currently looking for schools and daycares who would like to participate in our FREE program.
